How old do you have to be to start taekwondo?
Children who are three years old can start taekwondo in our Little Ninjas program. Children ages six and up can start taekwondo in our kids classes. Teens and adults ages 12 and up can start taekwondo in our adults classes.
How often should I come to class?
Students should attend a minimum of 2 classes a week (3 is best). Setting a consistent schedule is important. Students that do not come to class consistently often feel out of place and then do not want to come to class. While students that do come on a consistent basis feel better and actually look forward to coming to class.
What should I wear?
For your first trial workout you can wear sweatpants and a t-shirt. Please leave all jewelry at home as these may cause an injury to you or other students.
Each student is issued an official Taekwondo America uniform upon enrollment. All students are required to wear either their full uniform or their uniform pants, a MTA t-shirt or a souvenir Taekwondo America t-shirt from an event, and belt. Female students should wear a plain white t-shirt under their uniform jacket when in full uniform. Uniforms should be clean and free of holes.
What do the instructors expect from the students?
All of the instructors and I expect our students to give their best effort. Technique at the early stages of training is not as important as a positive attitude. If a student tries hard and has a good attitude, they will develop better technique over time because they are listening and learning.
What if my child uses taekwondo at home or at school?
Tell us IMMEDIATELY. While we understand that students can be a little over anxious to share and show off, this can be dangerous. Please inform us as soon as possible so that we can take steps to correct the situation.
How do the students earn black "stripes" in class?
Each stripe is earned in class for achieving a short term goal that breaks up the requirements for advancement from one belt to the next. Students will have the opportunity to test for stripes during their class times throughout the testing cycle, and should have all their stripes by testing. When a student has all their stripes, they are ready to test for their next belt.
How do I find out what is happening at the school?
Every month, the school publishes a newsletter so that all of the students (and parents) know the dates and times for upcoming events. Additionally, each newsletter will have the current class schedule in it. You can also check out our website at or ‘like’ the McClellan's Taekwondo Academy (MTA) on Facebook .
What is testing?
Testing is a process where we evaluate the skills of the student to determine whether they are ready to progress to the next level of training. What is expected of students depends on the rank, age and physical ability of the student. Each student is encouraged to train consistently in order to learn their material and test when they are eligible, but testing is optional. Testings are held every two months. For information about testing fees click HERE.
How long does it take to become a black belt?
It is mathematically possible to become a black belt within 3 years. However, it takes most people longer to attain that rank. A black belt is simply a master of the basics. Although it is a new beginning to serious training, it is definitely not the end.
Are there any other schools nearby?
YES! Taekwondo America is a large, national organization with member schools all across the United States and there are many Taekwondo America schools in the Columbus area. We have schools in Westerville and Sunbury, Hilliard, Powell and Worthington. Best of all – we often get students and instructors from these schools to visit and train with us. Any McClellan's Taekwondo Academy student is encouraged to go and train at these fine schools! This is the advantage of being a part of a recognized and solid national organization!
